Thanks to all of you that came out to our first nighttime meeting on January 10th and also approved having the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm to be our regular membership meeting time. It is time to pick a date(s) for our Young Eagle and Merit Badge day(s). Please think about a day and also hopefully you will be available to participate as we will need pilots and individuals to man the stations for both the events. I hope we would be able to have multiple days this year to encourage more of our youth to participate. We simulated bugs on the leading edge using cheese whiz on the tip of a screwdriver and blowing it on the wing with an air nozzle. They were doing similar tests back at Langley NASA. We got the same results with our test as they did—for $100,000 less money! Paul Bikle was the director of NASA at Dryden Research Center at Edwards Airforce Base. He was well known in the soaring world. He held the world’s altitude record for sailplanes, having set that record in the 1960s with an altitude of 46,267 feet. Paul knew many of the “Aviation Greats” like Hanna Reitsch, Warner Von Braun, Peter Rydell, and Tiny Brodbeck, to name a few. I ran the Flying School for airplanes and gliders at Rosamond Airport. At the time I was the FBO operator and owner of the airport. The Airport was Paul Bikle’s playground. He spent his leisure time there flying gliders and hanging out with the other pilots exchanging tales. Paul, myself and Warner Von Braun would often fly sailplanes together. * * * * * Some information about the HP-14 T sailplane we used for this test: Plaul Bikle built the HP-14 T in 6 months. This glider had a V-tail which he modified into a T-tail and built removable wingtips for it. He would go from a “standard class” to “open class” in about 10 minutes. The glider was built under license by Slingsby Aircraft of England. They built about 40 of them. There was also a two-place conversion that |

John Pool, President The following story with photos and specs was submitted by Bill Aronson. Wake Turbulence Caused by Bugs and Dirt In the 1970’s I had the privilege to work with Paul Bikle on a study of the effects caused by dirt and insects on an airfoil. We mounted a pressure transducer on the trailing edge of the left wing of a Schreder HP-14T sailplane to measure wake turbulence caused by bugs on the leading edge of the wing and different surfaces on the wing. We sanded a portion of the wing with 360 grit sandpaper at a 45-degree angle and 45 degrees in the opposite direction. The sand marks increased the lift co-efficient. In the 1930’s Thompsons and Bendix racers sanded their prop blades to get more thrust. They could go 5-10 miles per hour faster. The sanded surfaces seemed to act as mini vortex generators.
