President’s Message:

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, January 10th. at 7:00 pm, in our hangar and will continue with the second Tuesday of each month thereafter.  The change in meeting time was decided upon by the chapter’s Board of Directors at their last meeting.  We hope this change will increase the turnout of chapter members at our monthly meetings.

I am looking forward to 2006 and hope the plans that I will present to our membership in January will bring us more activities for our members to be involved with to further our chapter goals.

FEDS ORDER AIRCRAFT OWNERS TO UPDATE

REGISTRATIONS BY FEBRUARY 2006

**************************************

Aircraft owners and operators have until

February 2, 2006 to ensure their aircraft registration information is properly completed and up to date (including address) or they may be denied access to the National Airspace

System (NAS).

An FAA notice published in the Federal Register on December 9 indicates that FAA and TSA "will revitalize and refocus" U.S. airspace monitoring

capabilities to ensure that each aircraft operating within the NAS has met all statutory, regulatory

and certification requirements, effective February 1, 2006.

Bill Aronson wrote the following article and provided the photos.

Speed—the movie----Imax Production

Art Scholl cameraman, pilot; Bill Aronson

tow plane pilot

Bill Aronson’s adventures while filming the movie “Speed” in Mammoth Lakes, California,

November 1978.

Studio contacted me in September 1978 to make camera mounts for 2-32 Glider. One on the nose, and one on the right-hand wing, and one on the aft cockpit.  This camera weighs 90-some lbs including the battery pack. It took 26 lbs of lead on the other wing to balance it.

I did a reverse weight and balance to determine the locations of the camera mounts and their moments.

The other two mounts were made for four other movies: The Flyer for the Smithsonian Institution, To Make a Wish, Celebrity Dare Devils, and a Walt Disney movie, Skytrap.

We started off towing the 2-32 up to Mammoth Lakes for filming, flying mostly over Convict Lake. The tow to Mammoth took two hours and forty-five minutes. We had a headwind.

Ran short of fuel and landed at Independence up by Lone Pine. Fortunately, Diane was driving the truck up to Mammoth at the time, and I went to the highway and flagged her down as she drove thru. (We did not have cell phones then.) I borrowed several gas cans from the service station, filled them up and drove back to the airport to refuel the tow plane.

We made the takeoff from Independence without a wing runner without any problems.

Rented a hangar at Mammoth Airport, and that evening Art and I installed the mounts and cameras.

We used the wing mount for this particular Imax movie called Speed. It was positioned to where you made a left-hand turn over your subject and the wide-angle lens would take in the side of the glider with the left wing pointed down at the subject.

We launched the next morning at sunrise and I towed Art up to 15,000 feet a.s.l. We made three flights that day to accomplish the mission.  It was 50 below zero at 15,000 feet. I didn’t have any cabin heat in the tow plane.  It was cold to say the least, even though I was bundled up pretty good.

We proved the shots by mounting a video camera on the mount. That way we could immediately proof the shots we had taken.

The next day we removed the mount and camera and headed home. We had a tailwind. It only took an hour and twenty minutes to go home.

Unfortunately, Art Scholl was killed a few weeks later in lhis Pitts S-2 while filming Top Gun starring Tom Cruise. The only radio transmission they had from Art was “I’ve got a problem. I’ve got a REAL problem. He spun into the ocean trying to recover from an inverted flat spin. The plane and body were never recovered.
